How do you get your business listed in ChatGPT?
There is no form to fill in. What you can actually do, by type of business: let ChatGPT's crawler in, fix the records Google reads about you, claim your knowledge panel, and decide whether a Zillow-style connector is worth it. Step by step, from the official docs.
How do you get your business listed in ChatGPT?
By Andrej Ruckij · October 28, 2026
TL;DR: There is no listing form for ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews. They describe your business from what they can read about you, so the work is making sure they can read you and that the records they read are right. For any website that’s a ten-minute robots.txt check. A local business should fix its Google Business Profile, and a company without a shop front should claim its Google knowledge panel. You can’t edit what an AI Overview says about you directly; you edit the sources it reads. The next level, a connector like the one Zillow launched inside Claude this month, only makes sense for companies whose customers can finish a real action in a chat.
What changed this month
On October 19 Zillow launched a connector for Claude. You add it in Claude’s settings, ask for three-bedroom homes in a city under a price, and get real listings inside the chat. From there you can request a tour, reach an agent or look at financing without leaving the conversation. Zillow already had versions in ChatGPT and Gemini.
That’s a different position from being mentioned. A mention means the assistant talks about you. A connector means the assistant sends the customer to you when they want to act. I think that second position is where this is heading for a lot of categories. But Zillow hasn’t published a single number on tours or leads from any of these connectors, so for now it’s a direction, not proof.
For almost every business reading this, the useful work is one level down. Here it is by type of business.
How to do it
Any business with a website: can ChatGPT read your site at all? (about 10 minutes)
ChatGPT search finds sites through OpenAI’s crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI’s own documentation is blunt about it: “Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.”
- Type
yourdomain.com/robots.txtinto your browser, with your own domain. - Look for
User-agent: OAI-SearchBotfollowed byDisallow: /, or a blanketUser-agent: *withDisallow: /. Either one keeps you out of ChatGPT search. - If you find one, ask whoever runs your site to change it to
Allow: /for OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says it takes about 24 hours for its systems to pick up the change. - Do the same check for Google. Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, but the page has to be indexed and allowed a snippet. In Google Search Console, run URL Inspection on your homepage and your main service page, and make sure neither carries
noindexornosnippet.
If you’re unsure whether blocking crawlers costs you anything, I compared the trade-offs in what you lose by blocking AI search bots.
How do I see what ChatGPT says about my business now? (about 10 minutes)
Type these into ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, and save the answers so you can compare in a month:
- “What does [your company name] do, and who is it for?”
- “Best [your category] in [your city]” for a local business, or “Best [your category] for [your typical customer]” for everyone else.
- “What do customers say about [your company name]?”
Wrong facts in answer 1 point to the records below. If you’re missing from answer 2, start by reading your own homepage the way a stranger would: does it say plainly what you do, for whom and where?
Local business with an address or service area: fix your Google Business Profile (about 20 minutes)
Google’s own help pages tell local businesses to manage their information through a Business Profile rather than a knowledge panel. To edit it:
- Go to
business.google.comand sign in with the Google account linked to your profile, or open the Google Maps app and tap Business. - Select Edit profile.
- Check the name is exactly what’s on your signage, set your primary category plus up to 9 more, and correct your hours, including holiday hours.
- Write the description (up to 750 characters, no URLs) as plain facts: what you do, for whom, where. That’s the sentence you’d want an assistant to repeat.
- Select Save. Google reviews changes before they go live.
Company or brand without a shop front: claim your knowledge panel (about 15 minutes, then a review)
- Search Google for your company name. If a knowledge panel appears, click Claim this knowledge panel at the bottom of it.
- Verify by signing in to one of the official profiles Google lists for your company (YouTube, Search Console, Twitter or Facebook).
- To fix a fact, click Feedback under the panel, flag the fact, write what it should say and add links to pages that prove it, then submit.
These are suggestions Google reviews, not direct edits. Not every panel can be claimed, so if there’s no button, check again later.
Can I edit what Google’s AI Overview says about my company?
Not directly. Google’s documentation on AI features describes no way to correct an AI Overview’s wording, and says no special optimisation is needed beyond normal search eligibility. What you can change is the information Google keeps about you and lets you correct: your own pages, your Business Profile and your knowledge panel. Google doesn’t say how or when an AI Overview picks those changes up, so fix them, note the date, and search your company name again in a few weeks.
Should I build a connector like Zillow’s?
Only if two things are true. Your customer’s next step can actually happen in a chat (booking a viewing, getting a quote, checking stock), and you have developers to build and maintain it. That’s a real estate portal, a booking platform or a large retailer. For a clinic, an agency or a shop, the steps above are the work. Online stores have a separate route through product feeds, which I covered in ChatGPT shopping is mostly Google Shopping.
Start with the robots.txt check. It takes ten minutes, and if you fail it, nothing else here will get you into ChatGPT search.
