Simple explanation

Imagine you spent $2M on marketing last year across Meta ads, Google ads, podcast, TV, and SEO. The business made $8M in revenue. Which channel actually drove what share of that revenue?

Last-click attribution would say “whichever channel the customer clicked last.” This is what most analytics platforms default to. It’s wrong — it credits the bottom of the funnel and ignores everything that built the demand the bottom captured.

Multi-touch attribution (MTA) tries to spread credit across multiple touchpoints in a user’s journey. Better, but requires tracking users across channels — which cookie deprecation and iOS 14.5 broke.

Marketing Mix Modeling takes a different approach. Instead of trying to track individual users, MMM looks at aggregate patterns over time. When you spent more on TV, did revenue go up? By how much? Honest limits

  • Garbage in, garbage out. MMM needs clean spend + outcome data going back 18+ months. New brands and brands without analytics infrastructure can’t deploy MMM immediately.
  • Multicollinearity is hard. If two channels were always scaled together (e.g., Meta and Google ads moved in lockstep), the model can’t separate their contributions. Test designs help; in some cases the data simply can’t answer the question.
  • Brand effects are hard to attribute. Brand investment that pays off over years is hard to capture in a model with weekly granularity. Some MMM tools include long-term brand-equity terms; the methodology is still evolving.
  • External shocks confound. A model trained on 2020-2022 data and applied to 2023-2024 may produce wrong recommendations because of macroeconomic shifts, channel saturation changes, or new competitor entries.
  • Vendor claims are directional. The “22pp accuracy improvement” and similar AI-MMM marketing claims are real in their specific test contexts but don’t validate against a common benchmark.
